Media Violence

Violence pervades the media through Internet, television, movies, video games, and music. Children and adolescents, who absorb everything they are exposed to as a way to help them make sense of the world around them, can be impacted by exposure to violence in the media.

Before the average child reaches 18 years of age, he or she will have witnessed 200,000 acts of violence on television, including 40,000 murders. Violent video games can cause people to have more aggressive thoughts, feelings, behaviors, and decrease helpful behaviors with peers. The data linking TV viewing to violent behavior is 3 times stronger than the data linking tobacco and cancer.
